Javen rhinoceroses are the most threatened of the rhino species with less than 100 individuals left. They are unique because of their one horn which grows up to 10 inches.  They are threatened to near extinction due to poaching and loss of habitat.
 
Great efforts are being made to increase their numbers and habitat through careful breeding programs and removing Arenga palm trees which squeeze out the plants and foliage needed for the Javen rhino to survive.  Rhino horns also hold significant value on the black market to poaching is always a threat.
 
I creating this painting to show the sadness of mythical thinking that leads to them being decimated for their horns.  This belief is not founded in truth or science and we could lose these animals forever.
